Circularity: second life of the office walls.

Background:

The covid-19 pandemic catalyzed the phasing out of stuffy, workstation-centric office spaces. Many corporate offices are undergoing renovation to become the workplace of the future. More collaborative, informal spaces are replacing isolated individual workstations. As the primary space maker, office interior partitions become the target of demolition in this new wave of refurbishment projects.

BIM technology largely streamlines the inventorization of demolished building components. A kit of demolished interior partitions can be easily recorded and visualized in 3D model space.

The Banality of the office walls lies in the endless composition of rectangular rooms. (like in a Mondrian painting!) Once removed from the office of the past, the office walls can be freed from the 90 degrees, and freed from composition; then become techtonic.

The office walls, in contrast with the expectation of their behavior create the possibility of ‘sculptural’ quality.
